This is a project report on the translation of “‘More Than the Calf Wants to Suck,the Cows Wants to Give': The Student-Teacher Relation in Jewish Tradition”.It is an introduction to Make Yourself a Teacher.The writer is Susan Handelman,who is now a professor in Department of English of Bar-Ilan University and an internationally reputed expert in interpreting Jewish and Greek philosophy.The targeted goal for this translation is to provide deeper understandings about teacher-student relation mentioned in this book to the Chinese readers who lack of related cultural background and identification.Thus,some experience may be adopted in China's education reform.The essay,beginning with three stories,analyzes the teacher-student relation in Jewish tradition from a deep aspect.Prof.Handelman describing three stories happened in different ages,tells us the unique feature of Jewish traditional teacher-student relation.As the source text contains a great number of Talmudic terminologies and Biblical quotations,it is necessary for the translator to be good at the conversion between Chinese and English.Meanwhile,translators should know abundant cross-cultural background knowledge of Judaism,Jewish culture,Talmud and the Bible.Since the aim of the source text is to explain some important concepts in Make Yourself a Teacher,the translator thought it should fall into the informative text.Meanwhile,to make the target text fluent and understandable,the translator adopted Skopos theory in her translation process with some footnotes for explanation.However,there are still some problems to be solved in the whole translation process.
