| Music of Latin America and the Caribbean,the second edition,was edited by Mark Brill,associate professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio,the US.The book,designed for music-lovers,aims to introduce musical tradition,songs and dances,as well as customs and cultures in Latin America and the Caribbean.It enables music lovers to learn musical traditions,instruments and their development path and will definitely contribute to spreading music culture and classic traditions of those areas worldwide.The source text of this project is extracted from Chapter I of the book.It belongs to informative text,aiming to introduce an overview of music of Latin America and the Caribbean.To guide this translation process,the translator chose Text Typology presented by German renowned Katharina Reiss together with three basic principles in translation under Alexander Fraser Tytler.This report has six chapters.The first three introduce the background of the translation project,something about the source text,and the translation preparation respectively;chapter four presents the theoretical basis and guiding principles;chapter five mainly analyze the difficult points,including difference of thinking mode,different expressive ways and usages of verbs between Chinese and English and Cultural Default in cross-cultural translation as well as their solutions.Then comes the conclusion of the project.As a cross-cultural activity,translation bears great challenges.This translation practice is so tough that the translator deeply realizes that it is practice and expertise that make a qualified translator.As learners,we should always bear in mind that apart from translation theories and methods,we should also strive to accumulate knowledge,train our thoughts,enhance our mother tongue and ensure our proficiency in both English and Chinese to make translation approach or reach our ultimate goal of achieving faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance. |
