The author is commissioned by the Center for Latin American and the Caribbean Studies to translate Chapter One and selected sections of Chapter Two of At a Crossroads:Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean to provide a Chinese version of literature to the Center’s researchers.The volume of essays includes more than ten research articles that provide a detailed introduction and analysis of the current situation,policies,and development prospects of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean region.This book is an invaluable reference for studying higher education in this region,but it is not yet available in Chinese.The author is entrusted with the translation of this book,the outcome of which can effectively provide support for researchers in China.Under the guidance of Reiss’ s text typology theory,based on which the translation practice report is written.The source text is categorized as informative text according to text type classification.Based on the linguistic features and style of the source text,the author analyzes the translation of the source text from three aspects: words,sentences,and texts.For different language characteristics,different translation methods are adopted.The author chooses the literal translation to translate terms,numbers and names,and other professional vocabularies.Free translation and lexical conversion are used to make the target language more consistent with Chinese expressions.In the case of sentences,amplification,omission,and division are applied to make the target language explicit and well structured.In terms of texts,informative texts’ linguistic features and functions are applied to make whole translation concise and logical.Reiss’ s text typology theory has a critical guiding role in analyzing text types and determining translation methods.Based on the features of informative text and translation standards,a reasonable translation plan of this project is established and the practice can be accomplished. |
