Conceptual Metaphor And Metonymy In Nalan Xingde's Lyrics

Nalan Xingde,as one of the three great poets of Qing Dynasty,has always been focused by scholars.Researchers of Qing ci mainly discuss different aspects of his family,life and cultural psychology.Many scholars in China have carried out extensive analysis and research on the style,aesthetics,emotion and imagery of Nalan Xingde's lyrics,and they have made different contributions.However,few scholars have studied Nalan Xingde's lyrics from the cognitive perspective.Based on this situation,the thesis attempts to study conceptual metaphors,conceptual metonymies,metaphtonymies in Nalan Xingde's lyrics with the relevant theory of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy in cognitive linguistics.The research tries to reveal the cognitive mechanism behind the poet's creation of lyrics,and deepens readers' understanding and appreciation of his lyrics.Through systematic analysis,it is found that:(1)There are many conceptual metaphors and metonymies in Nalan Xingde's lyrics,among which conceptual metonymies are used more than metaphors.(2)According to the content of Nalan Xingde's lyrics,the conceptual metaphors in Nalan Xingde's lyrics can be mainly divided into four types: HUMAN &HUMAN ATTRIBUTES Metaphors,ANIMAL metaphors,PLANT metaphors and NATURAL PHENOMENON metaphors.HUMAN & HUMAN ATTRIBUTES Metaphors include HUMAN metaphors,SORROW metaphors,DREAM metaphors and LIFE metaphors.However,conceptual metonymies in Nalan Xingde's lyrics can be mainly divided into five types: Location metonymies,Category-and-Property metonymies,Category-and-Member metonymies,Part-and-Whole metonymies and Constitution metonymies.Metaphtonymies in Nalan Xingde's lyrics prove that metaphor and metonymy,as basic cognitive and thinking mode of human beings,often interweave with each other to form various interactionsand connections.(3)The images and emotions expressed by means of metaphors and metonymies in Nalan Xingde's lyrics are based on his personal life experiences and the historical background in which he lived.This research provides a new perspective for understanding Nalan Xingde's lyrics.It is our belief that more and more scholars will focus on Chinese classical poetry from the perspective of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy in the future.
