The Dictionary of Film Art points out that non-professional actors refer to amateur actors who are not specialized in performing arts and are only temporarily invited by the film crew to play a certain role. With the continuous development of the film and the constant changes in the means of artistic creation, many film genres and directors specially look for non-professional actors to play the protagonists in the film out of the pursuit of aesthetic style. In the mid-20 th century, the film theory of realistic aesthetics proposed by André Bazin first defined non-professional actors as a type of actor. The emergence of non-professional actors has enriched the type of film performance creation and provided the director with fresh materials. The wide existence of non-professional actors can attribute to the space given by the artistic characteristics of the film: The performance of the actors is not the core of film technology.Film is a director-centered artistic creation. The montage language of the film determines that the film performance does not need to have“stylized external performance” and “coherence of emotions and movements” like theatrical performances. Its characteristics of the sub-lens performances make it possible for people without professional training to be "masters of performance" under the magic of light and shadow as long as the director can make full use of the film language to make effective screen selection.Secondly, the highly realistic nature of the film requires the film performance be more natural and lifelike than the drama performance. For example, the use of non-professional actors in film shooting can bring a simple life atmosphere and a strong documentary style to the film, which is of great significance to overcome stylized and typed characters, improve the quality of film art,and complete the director's pursuit of "realistic aesthetics".It can be seen from this that the success of the screen image shaped by non-professional actors is mostly inseparable from directors' specific use of non-professional actors. As the final author of the film, the director does not completely rely on the performance of actors in shaping the image of characters.Instead, they can take and extract the materials using various film techniques, and finally complete the shaping of the image of characters. Therefore, this paper willintroduce the methods directors' use non-professional actors from the customized preparation for non-professional actors in the early stage of film shooting, their improvisation for non-professional actors during the film shooting and their reconstruction of performance materials by non-professional actors in film post-production.In addition to the introduction part, this paper is divided into three chapters.Chapter I introduces the birth and historical origins of non-professional actors with the focus on the performance of non-professional actors in film works driven by the new film movement around the world.Chapter II discusses the relationship between non-professional actors and directors in performance creation, points out the creation limitations of non-professional actors and their dependence on directors, and expounds the process for directors to guide non-professional actors to create screen works and complete their pursuit of film aesthetics based on their artistic characteristics.Chapter III,from the perspective of methodology, elaborates on how the director uses various film techniques in screen creation for the non-professional actors' performance before, during and after film shooting, thereby completing the shaping of screen images.
