Explicitation is to explicate the implicit information in the original texts. The concept of explicitation is first introduced by Vinay and Darbelnet in 1958.Based on the data collected from bi-directional parallel corpora, scholars developed the theory constantly and proposed the explicitation strategy. With the assistance of explicitation, the translation seems longer than the original one. However, the readability and acceptability of the rendering are improved. The report is based on the translation of Strangers in Their Own Land. The study of American political transformation from the perspective of the white conservatives is a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award in the nonfiction category. As a social science text, the book exchanges information by means of concepts that take the form of technique terms.Incorporating ethnic and cultural characteristics, these concepts are hard to be rendered equivalents in different languages. Therefore, the big challenge for the translator is to make up for the lack of background knowledge and improve the readability of rendering, which is also mentioned in the explicitation theory.Based on the translation of the preface and the first chapter, this paper discusses the translation problems involving culture, ethnic, political parties and other elements.Readers who are not familiar with the American political system would have difficulty in understanding the meaning of the book. Therefore, this paper aims to deal the translation problem with the explicitation strategy. The research method of this paper is to analyze translation examples with the guidance of the explicitation strategy, which are categorized into four types namely obligatory, optional, pragmatic and translation inherent. The targeted language reader can not get the information expressed by the author especially from another country,so the task of the translator is to make up for the background knowledge. This paper discusses the pragmatic explicitation from the perspective of using footnotes and adding explanatory notes.Consequently, the theory is further developed with practical translation.
