John Christian Friedrich H(?)lderlin is an eminent poet polished by ages, and the avant-courier of German classical romanticism. He has been left in the corner for about a century but becomes one of the greatest poets in Heidegger's and other writers' works.Hyperion oder der Eremit in Griechenland is the only one novel that he published during his life time, which represents the author's ideological achievement.Hyperion oder der Eremit in Griechenland depicts Hyperion's nature of beauty by referring to ancient Greek conception of beauty, that is the unity differentiating from self in one's own.His consistent desire and inquiry for the ancient Greek culture contributes to his nature of beauty, since he feasts his eyes on Homer's epics,Plato's dialogue and Sophocles' tragedies, and notes down the thought at the same time. From the imitation at beginning to the innovation at last,H(?)lderlin continuously studies the ancient Greek cultural spirit in depth, just as Hyperion grows in a long way gradually, with the changes from youth to the intrinsic quality, from passion to reason, and from a imaginative kingdom to a true as well as free state. As the intelligent tutor,Adams leads Hyperion to the human's existent system of knowledge and shows him the greatness of the Greek world whose beauty coordinates poetry and thoughts. It is the place where has higher harmony indefinitely than modern reason. Thus,Adams goes to the inner state in Asia accompany with the spiritual purposes of seeking the perfection and unity that are peculiar to the ancient Greece. And just then,Hyperion meets his important partner in life,Alabanda.Hoping for human's freedom and goodness in one day, they embrace each other and enter into the divine and intimate friendship written by Homer. However,Alabanda's absolute self spirit of subverting all becomes more and more obvious, and the companionship fades away in view of Hyperion's intolerability of the descending way to depart from nature and obey oneself only. The isolated and frustrated protagonist feels the sublime beauty and the eternal divinity of the ancient Greek spirit by his lover,Diotima.Because of her self-destruction,Hyperion comprehends the necessary way to realize harmony,or in other words, departing from oneself and uniting him into divine unity. The limitless one is just “the essence and chance of beauty”.When walking along the road from harmony to fission, and from fission to unity again, the sincere poet draws every stage of the changeable soul and carves out a path that bridges an individualunit and the universal divinity in oneself, which reappears the ancient Greek cultural spirits that are the oneness between poetry and thought, the harmony between beauty and goodness, and the coexistence of human and divine beings.
