Nowadays, the interaction between people is the foundation of establishing the social relations and maintaining social survivals during our social life. However, the human interaction does not always lead to positive results, for example, the social exclusion. It can trigger negative emotions, threats of belonging and even the anti-social behaviors, which would bring negative influence on the individuals, groups and even the society. Therefore,in order to reduce the negative impact of social exclusion, individuals try to adopt various strategies to prevent it,such as avoidance, transference and re-integration.Among these strategies, the impression management plays an important role in dealing with the negative effects of social exclusion. In order to fit into society better and get corresponding negative compensation, individuals can make others re-evaluate them by impression management so as to improve themselves, regulate interpersonal relations and adjust evaluations. When individuals are excluded by society, there are many possible mechanisms that can cause the impression management.Previous studies have demonstrated that social rejection can cause affiliation needs, evaluation anxiety, value appeals, recognitions, and even the pain. However, the author believes that the initial impact of social exclusion on individuals is reflected in the deprivation of individual belonging needs, which is directly related to the affiliation motivations and the sense of personal power. The former is the psychological activity induced by the environment, while the latter is the psychological process based on individual independence. They interact with each other. So,when facing with social exclusion, the change of affiliation motivations and personal power will prompt individuals to conduct impression management behaviors. However, affected by individual social differences, the impression management mechanisms differ in persons. So does the selection of the content. It relates to the formation of event impression before the impression management. However, the formation of individual impression will follow some rules which will also promote the individual to have different emphasis on the influence of affiliation motivations and sense of power after suffering social exclusion. Therefore, the study aims to probe into the part of the mechanism(affiliation motivations, sense of power)of impression management generated by individuals after suffering social exclusion, and further explore the relationship between the selection of content of impression management after social exclusion and its generation mechanism through experiments.During the study, according to the description of need-threat model,Multi-motivation model theory, and competence-warmth model theory, four experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of self-designed social exclusion situations; The mediating effects of power sensations and affiliation motivations on impression management in social exclusion;and the differential effects of power perception and affiliation motivations in the mediating model. Also, the moderating effects of the relevant demographic variable in the model, gender, was explored based on the experimental results and previous research conclusions;and the verification of the compensation effect of the content of impression management. Then after the t-test,variance analysis?regression equation model and path analysis, the author draws the following conclusions:1.After the social exclusion, individuals can conduct impression management behaviors. Also, the sense of power and affiliation motivations play an intermediary role in the influence of social exclusion on impression management.2.Social exclusion can influence the content selection of impression management.Notably, gender can regulate the influence process of both and adjust the first half path of mediating effect respectively, and regulates the first half path of mediating effect respectively: After the social rejection, men's sense of power decreases, which would cause the impression management content about the promotion of sense of power;women's sense of affinity increases and then induces the impression management content related to affinity.3.The content of impression management conforms to the compensation mechanism of competence-warmth model.
