Reading is an essential element to measure students' English proficiency.Therefore,enhancing students' reading ability is a fundamental goal of English reading teaching.However,the traditional reading teaching method(teacher-centered method)tends to teach vocabulary and grammar through translating passage sentence by sentence.This method ignores cultivating learning autonomy and improving reading ability of junior high school students,which triggers the problems of time-consuming and low efficiency.With the development of educational information technology,Multimodal teaching mode emerges basing on Multimodal discourse analysis.In the class of Multimodal teaching mode,teachers can select and use various modal resources to coordinate teaching.Different modes can stimulate the different senses of the students so as to optimize the teaching effect.This thesis focuses on exploring whether Multimodal teaching mode is feasible to junior high school English reading teaching from the perspectives of two research questions:Question 1: Can Multimodal teaching mode improve junior high school students' learning autonomy in English reading process?Question 2: Can Multimodal teaching mode enhance junior high school students' English reading proficiency?There are 81 subjects in this study from two parallel classes of Grade 7 in Ganwang Junior High School of Haicheng County.The experiment lasts for 16 weeks from Sept.3rd,2018 to Dec.24 th,2018.In the course of the experiment,the experimental class(Class6)adopted Multimodal teaching mode and the control class(Class5)used the traditional reading teaching method.After the experiment,the data of questionnaires and tests are compared and analyzed by statistical software.Next,an interview is conducted in the experimental class to deeply explore the relationship between Multimodal teaching mode and learning autonomy and proficiency of English reading.The research result shows that applying Multimodal teaching mode is feasible and beneficial to English reading teaching in junior high school.After the experiment,students show a strong motivation to learn English reading and they can monitor their reading process effectively.Therefore,students' learning autonomy is significantly improved.In addition,the students' English reading proficiency have been improved observably.
