This paper is a critical commentary on the author's translation of the selected text. The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt is written by British Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson and published in 2011,from which Chapter 15 and Chapter 16 of Part 4 are selected as the source text.In the selected chapters,Wilkinson put emphasis on expounding the pivotal turning point of ancient Egypt, which is the Ramesside Period(from the Nineteenth to Twentieth dynasties)in a broad sense.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator employs such techniques as transliteration, conversion, amplification, division and combination. This paper develops from four aspects:the introduction, the guiding translation theory, the approaches applied in the translation and the conclusion. This book is of great historical and translation value.By translating the two selected chapters, the translator aims to help target readers get a glimpse of the history of ancient Egypt in general and the Ramesside period in particular.Meanwhile, this translation material is of great appreciation value because of its literary features and elegant language.Through continuous revising the translation, the translator gains a better understanding of the source text and the functional equivalence theory. The translator can summarize the theories and approaches employed in the process of translation and apply them to similar translating projects in the future.
