This project consists of two sections:one of which is the English-Chinese translation;the other one is the translation report written by the author based on the translation practice. The English text is excerpted from The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt by British Egyptologist Toby A.H.Wilkinson.The excerpt is the sixth chapter and seventh chapter of this book, which is an introduction of the transition between the old and new dynasties, including the civil war, tyranny of a tumultuous Egypt and weaknesses of hereditary monarchy.Guided by the functional equivalence theory, the translator adopts such translation strategies as conversion of part of speech, addition, reinvention, change of voice and "following the original syntactic order" to render the excerpt into Chinese. As the translation material selected in this paper is a historical text about ancient Egypt, the translator needs to consult relevant historical materials for support in the translation practice. This translation project has certain practical significance as well as academic research value. For one thing,as one of the four ancient civilizations in the world,Egypt has a long and complex history.Readers can understand the political transition, cultural prosperity and historical changes in the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt by reading the translation of the excerpts of this book. For another, the translated text may be of use to Chinese Egyptology scholars whose research on ancient Egyptian civilization is impeded by a lack of knowledge in English. In the process of revising and improving the translation, the author of this paper achieved a better understanding of the functional equivalence theory and learned to explore the actual meaning of the original text and the author's purpose of writing.
