The thesis adopts both qualitative and quantitative research method. It fully studies the application and embodiment of appellations under the perspective of Leech’s politeness principle. On the basis of the discussion,in order to make the argument of this paper more objective, the author adopts the SPSS descriptive analysis method.Variable A is the appellations, and the variable B is the behavior of the character or the politeness of each character.Through inputting statistical data, the relationship between the two is analyzed. So the author of the thesis will draw the objective conclusions. Thus, the character and politeness of the characters in the works are further presented in the form of objective data, thereby increasing the objectivity of the argument. The first chapter introduces George Bernard Shaw,Pygmalion, appellations and the current research status of the play. What’s more, the author mentions the significance as well as the organization and methodology of this research. In the second chapter, the author makes a systematic literature review of Pygmalion from five aspects as well as appellations. The third chapter is the theoretical framework. In this chapter, the author introduces the theories used in this thesis from four aspects:Grice’s conversational principle,Leech’s politeness principle, the relationship between the two,and the generation of conversational implicature. The fourth chapter is the main discussion chapter of this thesis. The author selects ten typical examples from the whole text, and through in-depth and systematic analysis, and it comes to the following conclusion:by studying the appellations used in the work,it is feasible to reflect their politeness to others and their personalities. What’s more, the author of the thesis also gives a further discussion in terms of social background, ethical identification and emotional dilemma. In order to avoid the author’s argument being too subjective, the author introduces SPSS descriptive analysis method in chapter five,so that it can support the author’s point of view through specific data. The sixth chapter is the conclusion. In this chapter, the author summarizes the whole research in this thesis. The author makes a conclusion from two aspects.Firstly, through the study of appellations, people can further understand the status of each character’s.From the perspective of research method of literary works,it also further proves the feasibility and applicability of using pragmatic theory to study literary works.Secondly, there are the research limitations and future research directions of this work.Through the study of appellations in Pygmalion,on one hand, people can further understand the application of Leech’s politeness principle in literary works;on the other hand,by studying the principle of Leech’s politeness principle, people can also better understand and analyze text itself. This thesis also provides a new perspective for appreciation of Pygmalion. The analysis of the politeness principle of Pygmalion is another attempt to verify the adoption of using pragmatic theory to study literary works.
