This is a translation practice report. The source text of the translation report is selected from Why Not Tonight written by Susan Mallery, who is a famous American female writer. The book is a romance novel, which mainly tells the love story of Natalie and Ronan, they go through a series of changes, comfort each other and finally get together. The author has selected the third and fourth chapters of the book to translate and has written this translation report.Based on Peter Newmark's theory of semantic translation and communicative translation, this translation practice adopts corresponding translation methods and techniques to translate the source text.Semantic translation emphasizes faithfulness to the source text and tries to retain the form and content of the source text. However, communicative translation focuses on the target language readers and presents the version to the readers in a smooth and idiomatic way on the basis of grasping the connotation of the source text.In the process of translation, the author encounters several difficulties, such as new words, long sentences and idioms. Therefore,in the process of reading the original text, the author consulted a large number of information,so as not to affect the accuracy of translation. For the difficult sentences, the author also made appropriate split and adjustment in order to achieve an ideal translation effect. This is the first time for the author to have a translation practice under the guidance of translation theory. Therefore, the following aspects should be done well in order to solve relevant problems and improve the quality of translation.Firstly, the author should fully understand some background knowledge before translation, including the creation background, writing style and personal character of the original text.Secondly,in the process of translation, the author should carefully consider difficult words and complex sentences to ensure the accuracy of the translation, and pay attention to the logic of the language to ensure the fluency of the translation. Finally,in the process of translation,it is necessary to keep the close combination of translation theories and specific cases,so as to avoid breaking away from theoretical guidance.
