The membership of United Nations of the Germany is a hot spot in Post-war international relations and is considered to be a "barometer" of the relationship between the East and the West. This disputed issue is also a major challenge of the international community and the United Nations. After the Second World War,Germany was occupied by the Big Four according to the zoning. The beginning of the Cold War made the temporary occupation of Germany a Permanent division. In 1949,the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic were established in the West Zone and Soviet Zone respectively, and both began to seek diplomatic recognition。As a product of the WWII,the United Nations played an important role in the post-war world system, and both FRG and GDR seeking intermational recognition will inevitably face the membership of the UN.Since 1950s,the Westerm Bloc which led by the U.S.has endeavoured to support the FRG to obtain UN observer status and special agency membership, while curbing the entry of the GDR.In 1960s,the dispute over the membership of GDR made the two blocs alnost arrogant in the UN.In early 1970s,with the relaxation between the East and West, the two Germans obtained the membership of the UN on 18 September 1973 after the game of great powers and interest swaps. The disputes over the membership of GDR and FRG are essentially direct projections of the relationship between the East and West camps with the US-Soviet relations at the core during the Cold War. |
