A Study On English Translation Of North Zhuang Opera From The Perspective Of Performability

Drama is a literary genre as well as a kind of performance art.The practice of drama translation has been going on for centuries.Yet,there remains a relative lack of academic interest in drama translation research.With unique performance form and colorful language,north Zhuang opera possesses high artistic value,having been listed as world intangible cultural heritage.However,the spread and inheritance of north Zhuang opera is still facing great difficulty,and there is only a small amount of drama translation research relevant to north Zhuang opera.As a kind of historical performance art,north Zhuang opera embodies performability in nature,thus,the uniqueness of dramatist text should not be overlooked.In the process of translation,translators necessitate to take performability into consideration,ensuring that the translated dramatic script is performable.As a performing artist,drama translator and director,Ying Ruocheng is a well-known expert in the area of drama translation in China.His authoritative and typical drama translation theory can guide drama translation research and practice effectively.Considering the uniqueness of north Zhuang opera script,this thesis tries to analyze the English translation of north Zhuang opera from the perspective of performability and in light of Ying Ruocheng’s drama translation theory,so as to explore whether the north Zhuang opera translation follows the principle of performability and achieves the performance function of dramatic script.This paper selects the English translation of the six representative operas in Selected North Zhuang Operas as resear-ch object.By analyzing the English translation of north Zhuang operas,this thesis finds out that the north Zhuang opera translation has the characteristics of speakability,actability,individuality,intelligibility and literariness.Hence,it can be said that the English translation of north Zhuang operas effectively reflects the performability of drama translation,and the excellent translated dramatic script is suitable to put on the stage.This research on the performability of north Zhuang opera translation can broaden drama translation research,enlarge translation research on minority drama and provide a new perspective for north Zhuang opera translation research.Besides,this study can deepen the understanding of north Zhuang opera,promote the spread and inheritance of north Zhuang opera,and serve as reference for drama translation practice in the future.
