The Violation To Grice's Cooperative Principle In Euphemism

Harmonious interpersonal relationship has always been the goal in people's life,and good interpersonal communication is the key to maintain interpersonal relationship.Grice,an American linguist and philosopher,believes that in language communication,in order to achieve a specific goal,there is a tacit understanding between the speaker and the listener,which is a kind of principle that both sides should abide by.Only when both sides abide by the principle,which is called Grice's cooperative principle,can they communicate smoothly.Grice's cooperative principle includes four maxims,which are maxim of quantity,maxim of quality,maxim of relation and maxim of manner.In the process of communication,people often deliberately violate Grice's cooperative principle because of the speaker's social purpose or reason,thus generating conversational implicature to convey the speaker's real meaning and purpose.Therefore,the study on the violation of Grice's cooperative principle has important guiding significance for interpersonal communication,and can better maintain the interpersonal relationship to achieve the smooth progress of social contact,trade and negotiation.Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon in interpersonal communication and a linguistic device used by people to achieve ideal communicative effect.Euphemism is also an important device in the process of social communication,which has four functions: taboo,politeness,concealment and humor.At the same time,people use euphemism as a language lubricant to mediate the relationship between people,and the study of it in people's communication has social linguistic value and practical significance.Desperate Housewives is a family drama close to daily life,and euphemism appears frequently in this drama.Therefore,this thesis chooses the drama as the research resource of euphemism.This thesis takes the lines of euphemisms with four pragmatic functions from Desperate Housewives as examples for analysis as the proof of the violation to Grice's cooperative principle of euphemisms.This thesis,from the perspective of the violation to Grice's cooperative principle,analyzes the reasons,purposes and conversational implicature of the euphemisms in Desperate Housewives by means of analysis and description.This thesis presents the dispute over the concept of "cooperation" in Grice's cooperative principle,and then reflects on whether the euphemism that violates the maxims really violates Grice's cooperative principle.In addition,this thesis analyzes the impact of the violation toGrice's cooperative principle of euphemism on interpersonal relations from both positive and negative aspects.Finally,this thesis gives some suggestions on interpersonal relationship from the perspective of violation to cooperative principle.
