Abstract/Summary:
For a long time, the research on students’ emotion in Second Language Acquisition(SLA)has been focusing on anxiety. In recent years, with the development of the positive psychology movement, the research in SLA shows positive changes as well. One of the most mentioned emotion is enjoyment. At present, scholars have actively discussed the concept of enjoyment, the influence of enjoyment on second language/foreign language learning and the influencing factors of enjoyment. Some achievements have been made, but there are still many deficiencies remain to be improved.Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT),which was formed in the 1980 s,is a teaching method characterized by the organization and implementation of tasks. It believes that effective language teaching is an experience in the real context, not just teaching.Being student-focused,TBLT attaches great importance to learners’ participation, completes a task in target language, and constructs a meaningful language system by themselves.Since the promulgation of the new curriculum standard,task-based teaching has been widely concerned in China.Enjoyment is often triggered by the organization of activities and the completion of tasks. In the process of doing tasks, students’ learning enthusiasm and happy mood will be significantly improved. And studies have shown that enjoyment has significant positive predictive effect on academic achievement. However, since the design and organization of TBLT require a large amount of class time, under the summative evaluation system of senior high school entrance examination, quite a few teachers place undue emphasis on the students’ score and ignore students’ learning emotion,so Task-based Teaching is not widely used in daily teaching. With combing previous studies, this research is going to prove the practicability of TBLT and the feasibility of promoting classroom enjoyment. For that case,I conducted a 4-week teaching experiment at a middle school in Hainan Province. Two classes participated in my research: one experimental class was taught by TBLT and the other one was taught by the traditional teaching method. There are 60 students in total.Via the comparison of enjoyment questionnaire in the pre-test and post-test in the two classes, the changes are investigated and studied. The questionnaire data were collected with the English Enjoyment Scale designed by Jin and Zhang(2018),and the data were analyzed with SPSS20.0 to answer the following three questions:(1)Can TBLT mode significantly improve the English classroom enjoyment of junior high school students?(2)If the task-based teaching model can significantly improve the English classroom mood of junior high school students, then what is the influencing mechanism? The results show that TBLT can significantly improve students’ classroom enjoyment.Meanwhile, qualitative research reveals that practical classroom activities, interesting teaching contents, humorous teachers’ language, relaxing classroom atmosphere, students’ sense of achievement and peer cooperation are the most-mentioned factors that cause classroom enjoyment. Finally, this paper discusses the results and puts forward some suggestions on how to carry out task-based teaching in English class and improve students’ enjoyment.
