The Current Use Of EFL Textbooks For Senior High Schools By PEP:A Study Based On The New Curriculum Standards

At present,as the textbooks of English as a foreign language(EFL)for senior high schools published by People's Education Press(PEP)are widely used in China,users and the publisher are increasingly more concerned with the advantages and disadvantages of the textbooks as exhibited in their application in order to better use it and revise it.However,because users and the publisher have not adopted systematic methods of survey,they have not obtained a systematic understanding of the current use of the textbooks.Meanwhile,with the continuous development of the study of textbook application in EFL teaching research,the study of the use of the EFL textbooks published by PEP has made steady progress with fruitful results.Up to now,however,empirical studies of the EFL textbooks by PEP are limited in quantity and quality,thus demanding more systematic further studies.In view of the above practical and academic settings,this study carries out a considerably systematic survey of the current use of the senior high school EFL textbooks compiled by Liu Daoyi and published by PEP,in the light of the 2017 New English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools,involving 97 first year senior high school students and 8 relevant teachers in one of China's middle school as participants,and employing such instruments of data collection as questionnaires and interview questions on the senior high school English textbooks published by PEP,and using SPSS2016 and Excel2016 as statistical instruments.Results generated from the study demonstrate:(1)The English textbook published by PEP in senior high schools fully conform to the New Curriculum Standards in the aspects of second language acquisition,comprehensive English learning skills,language input,emotion and affection,English learning strategies and the cultivation of intercultural communication competence.In addition,PEP English textbooks are based on Task-based teaching mode,humanism and student-centered principles,which meet the needs of the NCS for English classroom teaching.(2)No textbook is perfect.Similarly,the advantages and disadvantages coexist in the PEP English textbook,Carrying forward strengths and avoiding weaknesses,stirring up turbidity and making clarity,which means teachers should make flexible and creative use of textbooks and add or delete textbooks to help students improve their language competence in a real language environment.(3)Through in-depth learning,rational use and appropriate improvement,the PEP version of senior high school English textbooks can totally meet the needs of teachers and students and play a decisive role in English classroom teaching.This study is expected to have both practical and academic significance.In practice,this study will contribute to the better application and revision of the PEP senior high school English textbook.Academically,this study may compensate for the insufficient and inadequate study of the use of senior high school English textbooks by PEP and promote EFL teaching research on the whole.
