One of Han Shaogong's long novel,A Dictionary of Maqiao,is a dictionary-style novel, which was published in 1996.Since its publication,it has aroused the interest of Julia Lovell,a famous sinologist and translator. The English version of A Dictionary of Maqiao was published in Columbia Press in August of 2003,which has attracted the attention of western readers. The successful spreading of A Dictionary of Maqiao in the west mainly contributes to the language features as well as cultural charm of the original works, and to the translator's understanding of the original works and translator's initiative subjectivity played in the translation process. This paper takes translator's subjectivity as the theoretical framework, and the English version of A Dictionary of Maqiao as a case to study the translation behavior of Julia Lovell. The author adopts qualitative methods, including literature review and text comparison analysis to analyze Julia Lovell's initiative subjectivity in source text selection and translation process. Therefore, this paper mainly proposes the following two research questions: First, what are Julia Lovell's principles in the selection of translated texts and what factors influence her choice of the text to be translated?Second, how does the translator Julia Lovell play her initiative subjectivity in the translation process to reflect faithful re-creative translation principles? And how the translator choose the proper translation principles to make the balance between the source text and the translated text? After research, the author has made the following conclusions:(1)Translator Julia Lovell chose A Dictionary of Maqiao as the translated text, which was mainly influenced by its text value and Julia's translation purpose, social and cultural background,as well as the translator's educational background and personal interest.(2)The translator Julia Lovell followed faithful re-creative translation principle in the translation process by adopting domestication and foreignization translation strategies,as well as addition, omission and other translation skills which have not only promoted the spreading of Chinese traditional culture and enriched the culture ofwestern countries, but also offered valuable reference for translation studies and translation practice of other dictionary-style novel.Through the study of the English translation of A Dictionary of Maqiao, this paper is expected to expand the research perspective of the translated version by analyzing translator's subjectivity played in the translation and summarizing the use of translation strategies and techniques, and offers reference and suggestions for future translation studies of Chinese literature.
