The traditional translation study mainly concentrates on translation mechanism, translation strategy. The traditional translation outlook on one hand denies the creativity of translation, on the other hand opposes the translator's performance of his subjectivity and creativity. The oppression against the translator's subjectivity has made the translator's cultural status marginalized. This problem can not be solved until the study on the translation's essence and its cultural function is renewed.Fortress Besieged is created by Mr. Qian Zhongshu who is a famous scholar in China. Its English version was published in 1979 by Indiana University Press which achieved a great success and was regarded as "the most outstanding academic works" by The American Books Association from 1980 to 1981. Yet, this version also encounters criticisms, such as mistranslation, inadequacies, impure English and rigid cultural transplantation. However, these criticisms are all originated from the perspective of the target language and culture, ignoring the translator's understanding of translation's nature, text's value and his pursuit of translation's goal. All this is certainly resulted from the lack of study on translation subjectivity. However, with the development of translation studies, especially in 1970s, there appeared "cultural turn" in translation studies in Western world. The cultural turn in translation studies look at translation from the cultural studies angle, taking translation studies away from purely linguistic analysis. This movement expands the space of translation study and makes the translator's subjectivity become an important topic. This thesis aims at studying the translators' subjectivity of Fortress Besieged from cultural consciousness, intertextuality and intersubjectivity, and explaining the translation strategy adopted by the translators. Finally, the thesis discusses the concept of foreignization, which gives the translators of Fortress Besieged a theoretical support.
