As a key element of English teaching in junior high school, listening teaching is very important to English learning. Therefore,to improve students' listening ability is an important task for English teachers. However, the current situation of English listening teaching in junior high school is not that optimistic and many problems still exist. The majority of the students in Huaiyang NO.1 Middle School are from rural areas and their English listening level is quite low. However, most of the English teachers in the school still adopts traditional teaching method to teach English listening, ignoring the center position of students and teachers' leading roles. As a result, students become passive containers for knowledge. As time goes on,the students will easily lose their interest in listening, which leads to the failure of effective improvement of listening achievement. Therefore,in order to change this situation and find a more effective teaching method, the author tries to introduce the communicative approach into English listening class in junior high school and investigate its effect. This thesis answers mainly the following three questions:(1)What's the effect of the communicative approach on improving students' English listening achievements in junior high school?(2)What's the effect of the communicative approach on improving students' interest in English listening in junior high school?(3)What are the problems in the application of the communicative approach in English listening teaching in junior high school? The experiment lasts for one semester. The author chooses two classes of the eighth grade of Huaiyang No.1 Middle School as the research subject, for the students in the two classes have similar proficiency in listening.Class One is the experimental class in which the author applies the communicative approach and Class Four is the controlled class in which the author still applies traditional teaching method. This thesis applies three research methods: experiment and questionnaire and interview. The author carries out pre-test and post-test in both the experimental class and the controlled class to explore the effect of the communicative approach on students' listening achievements and then analyzes the related data with SPSS22.0.Through questionnaires and interviews, the author tries to have a general understanding for students' interest in English listening and the communicative approach as well as problems that may occur in the process of the experiment. The experiment result shows that communicative language teaching can significantly improve students' English listening achievements as well as their interest in listening. At the same time, the author also finds out some problems in the application of the communicative approach in English listening teaching. For example, sometimes there are many classroom activities and they may well make students tired and bored. In the application of the communicative approach, attention must be paid to these problems in order to achieve ideal effects.
