The exchanges between China and the world consist in two aspects: one is communication on a superficial level;the other is related with substantive contents.Translation, including written translation and interpretation, plays an important role in such exchanges.Translation calls for practical bilingual competence,so contrastive study of the source and target languages is very essential. And a good knowledge of contrastive linguistics is required for a qualified translator.Contrastive studies show that English tends to be stative for its heavy use of nouns, while Chinese is more dynamic for its frequent use of verbs. Therefore, translators are supposed to take the general characters of the two languages into account and make conversions of the English nouns into Chinese verbs, and versa vice,in E-C or C-E translation. In view of the above,I consciously adopts the strategy of verbalization for vividness and conciseness,in the translation project. The strategy of verbalization means that verbs are used to convey the meanings expressed by non-verbs.Accordingly,it involves in the verbalization of nouns, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs,on the level of vocabulary.Taking the translation of Meaning in Life: The Harmony between Nature and Spirit as an illustration, the present report aims at examining in what conditions and how the strategy of verbalization should be adopted. The strategy of verbalization breaks through the barriers between parts of speech, making translation more flexible and readable. However,it is not compulsory but optional.Being loyal to the original text and author is primary.Translators should take the effect of the target text as a criterion of whether or not to verbalize.
