Catering to the implementation of the new curriculum reform and the new curriculum standards,English teaching has undergone major changes in both content and forms,of which the methods are more and more abundant and the objective is mainly to cultivate students’ comprehensive ability in language application.The English tests have also changed from the detection of pure grammatical structure knowledge,to examine the comprehensive ability of language use in context and especially in discourse.Therefore,in English teaching there arises a tendency to focus on cultivating the application ability and neglect the teaching of basic grammar knowledge,which greatly affects the status of grammar teaching.In this case,based on the analysis and study of relevant theories,this paper investigates the current situation and problems of middle school English grammar teaching with students and teachers in 4 junior and senior schools in Wuhan City and Suizhou City of Hubei Province,and proposes corresponding solutions,so as to arouse the attention and reflection of educational scholars on grammar teaching,and to better grammar teaching and promote teacher professional development.The research mainly covers three aspects:the first is the analysis of document materials,including the latest PEP(People’s Education Press)version of junior and senior English textbooks,and the English test papers of national college entrance examination(volume I)from 2014 to 2018;then,a questionnaire survey is conducted on 240 students from the 4 middle schools;and finally,the study interviews 8 junior and senior English teachers,all to solve the following questions:1.What are the problems existing in English grammar teaching in middle schools?2.How to solve these problems?3.What is the enlightenment this study provides for educators and English grammar teaching?Problems found from the analysis are:1.The textbooks well reflect the requirements of the new curriculum standards in teaching,but the arrangement of grammar knowledge points is not systematic,the content of the grammar columns are too simple and the new version of junior English textbook lack accuracy.2.The knowledge points in the test papers of national college entrance examination are distributed reasonably and run through the test papers,much attention is paid to examining the application of knowledge points in context.3.Students can correctly understand the status of grammar learning,but they lack interest in grammar learning and hope that grammar teaching could be more vivid and diverse.4.Teachers’ methods of grammar teaching vary,and experienced teachers pay more attention to grammar teaching than novice teachers,whose grammar teaching awareness is relatively weak and fickle.In view of the findings and problems,this paper proposes the following solutions to improve the current situation of grammar teaching.1.Teachers should have a systematic understanding of grammatical knowledge points of the entire stage of the middle school,integrate the scattered knowledge points,and flexibly choose the content of the teaching materials;In the specific explanation process,the content of grammar knowledge should be explicitly and clearly presented,and various teaching methods and multimedia materials should be flexibly adopted to activate the classroom atmosphere;2.Textbook compilers should pay more attention to the systematic distribution of grammar knowledge points,enrich the content in the grammar learning column section,and improve the accuracy of grammar vocabulary usage in discourse materials.3.Teachers should guide students to understand the meaning and significance of grammar knowledge,and its relationship with pronunciation,vocabulary,discourse and context,and teach the basic knowledge from the perspective of its application,to better preparing them for the college entrance examination.4.The evaluation of students’ grammar learning should be diversified,and more encouragement and acknowledgement should be given to students to enhance their confidence in learning.5.Teachers should strengthen their own learning of professional knowledge,reflect constantly on teaching and form a correct attitude towards grammar teaching.Finally,the enlightenment of the research on grammar teaching is that by analyzing the test papers according to the requirements of the textbook standards and the examination syllabus,and the investigation of students’ grammar learning,it is found that the importance of grammar knowledge in English learning is self-evident.However,there are still certain problems in the knowledge arrangement,teaching methods and teachers’ own understanding of grammar.It is necessary for all parties to work together to achieve better grammar teaching results.
