As one of the basic skills of English learning,writing is an important aspect that reflects learners' comprehensive linguistic-application ability as well as an indispensable part of English teaching.Despite its core value in English teaching and learning,writing tends to fall into an embarrassing situation caused by inadequate recognition of its importance and improper teaching measures,making it a criticism target of "double efforts with half results".Consequently,taking into account English writing difficulties that junior high school students encounter and based on relevant theories and research achievements,this research tries to explore into a feasible teaching approach of English writing by checking whether "reading-and-writing" is suitable for English teaching of writing in junior high schools,with an aim to ensure that students' writing abilities can be developed smoothly and steadily.To motivate students' English writing enthusiasms and creativities,this research tends to answer the following three questions:1.Can "reading-and-writing" enrich junior high school students' English writing contents?If yes,what specific aspects can it enrich?2.Can "reading-and-writing" stimulate junior high school students' interest in English writing?If yes,what specific aspects can it motivate?3.Can "reading-and-writing" improve junior high school students' scores/ability in English writing?If yes,to what extent can it improve?In order to answer the above questions,with 92 students from 2 parallel classes in Grade 9 of Nantong No.l Junior High School as subjects,this research lasted one semester.One class was assigned as the experimental class under "reading-and-writing",i.e.English reading and writing were integrated in the teaching process,while the other class as a control class under the traditional model,i.e.English reading and writing were taught separately.During the research,measures such as achievement tests,classroom/process observations and interviews were taken to demonstrate what influences"reading-and-writing" has upon the teaching of English writing of junior high school students.Lasting for a semester,the experimental teaching found that the experimental class students' writing performances were significantly improved,although the control class students' writing performances were also improved,but not significantly,indicating that"reading-and-writing" can effectively enrich junior high school students' writing contents,improve writing performances and motivate writing interest.The research findings suggest that English reading and writing can be integrated into the teaching process,for the sake of obtaining necessary information and knowledge from English reading materials to lay proper foundation for the improvement of English writing abilities.
