A Report On Libretto Translation Of The History Of Chinese Opera(Chapter 8)

Chinese opera embodies profound and traditional cultural heritage.Its genre and the particularity of language bring many challenges to the translation of opera.The translation practice is an English translation of the eighth chapter of The History of Chinese Opera.Based on the English translation practice,this report analyses the questions and difficulties during the translation process according to Susan Bassnett’s principle of performability.Meanwhile,this report summarizes methods of the libretto translation to give suggestions for opera translators.This thesis mainly contains four parts.In first chapter,it not only makes an introduction of The History of Chinese Opera,but also points out the purpose as well as meaning of this paper.In chapter two,this paper discusses features of libretto of Chinese opera in the first place.And in second place,it introduces the opera translation principle of performability of Susan Bassnett.The third chapter describes all the problems in the process of translation and ways to solve them.Lastly,it summarizes the significance of this translation practice.
