The Translation Of Homosexual Discourse From The Perspective Of Ideology

The “Cultural Turn” of translation studies goes beyond the simple comparison between a source text and a target text,and cultural school tends to take factors such as values,ideology and social systems of different times into consideration.Lefevere believes that translation is a kind of rewriting,which is a form of manipulation and a way to serve certain ideology.However,it is necessary to emphasize that translation,while being dominated by ideology,can also promote the emergence and development of new cultures and new thoughts.On the one hand,ideology of a target language influences and manipulates translation practice invisibly,as a result of which translator to some extent usually rewrites source text to cater to readers' cultural consciousness and aesthetics;on the other hand,seemingly being constrained by the culture of target language,translators can in fact react to the existing social ideology through translating practice influenced by their own ideology.By conducting a case study on Pan Guangdan's translation of Havelock Ellis' Psychology of Sex: A Manual for Students,this thesis manifests how ideology manipulates the translation of homosexual discourse,how Pan Guangdan as a translator makes cultural comparison between the East and the West through connecting local and foreign knowledge and how he supplements even contests the prevailing western homosexual discourse since the May Fourth Movement,picturing the once-neglected Chinese indigenous homosexual image.
