It is a new requirement for ethnic minority students to learn the common national language as well as the international language amid the economic globalization.Therefore,to develop ethnic education,it is necessary for minority students to master English,broaden their international vision,and develop their cross-cultural ability.There are requirements in the English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education that teachers should stimulate and strengthen students' learning interest in the teaching process and guide them to transform their interest into stable learning motivation gradually.So,probing into the ELM(English learning motivation)of minority students has significance in realizing the moral objective,improving the ability of international communication,and adapting to the multi-polarization of the world.This study took Wudu Central Primary School in Ebian Yi Autonomous region of Sichuan Province as a case and Yi pupils as subjects.This study was conducted with quantitative research and qualitative research in three steps: what,why,and how.The author collected the data with the questionnaires and then analyzed those data with SPSS22.0 to understand the present situation of Yi pupils' English learning motivation.In this way,the author could find out the main characteristics of Yi pupils' English learning motivation.After that,the author made an in-depth analysis of the influencing factors with the help of the interview method,questionnaire method,and practicality collection method.The interview outline and questionnaire were based on Dornyei,Z's foreign language learning motivation theory,which contained Language Level,Learner Level,and Learning Situation Level.At last,the author gave appropriate suggestions on how to stimulate Yi pupils' English learning motivation from teachers,parents,and school leaders.The research concludes that the general characteristic of Yi pupils' ELM is that achievement motivation and internal motivation are the maindrives in Yi pupils' English learning,but external motivation has a significant difference between different genders,grades and performance levels.When it comes to influencing factors of Yi pupils' ELM characteristics,the research generates from three levels.From the outcomes of Language Level,Yi pupils have clear purposes in English learning.Their English learning is driven by integrative motivation.From the outcomes of Learner Level,Yi pupils,on the whole,have high interests in English learning.So,the learning purposes and learning interest directly lead to higher achievement motivation and internal motivation.However,from the outcomes of Learning Situation Level,teachers,parents,and school leaders do some poor jobs in some areas,which makes Yi pupils have weak external motivation.From these situations,we can know that external factors are the main factors in influencing Yi pupils' English learning motivation characteristics.In the social environment,the deepening of bilingual education and the sustainable and healthy development of economy have played a potential role in promoting the formation of students' English learning motivation.However,the subject of English is not taken seriously because school leaders do not give institutional protection to it.The contents of the teaching materials do not meet the actual needs.The school has no enough professional English teachers.Parents have a poor education background and English skills.According to these disadvantages,this thesis gives some implications for teachers,parents and school leaders to activate Yi pupils' ELM on a large scale.
