How to deliver some touching details that full of cultural features in the process of external communication and to let the western audience accept the narration of ours are the hot topics of external publicity in current discourse situation.Nowadays,in western media practices,entertainment news is often employed to improve the image of stars,to help western politicians to enhance the public opinions of them,or to inspire the value of a commercial brand.If entertainment stories are properly narrated,they can also create cultural symbols with remarkable communication effects.As a kind of soft news,entertainment text contains the natures of universality and has a close relationship with our daily lives in terms of content.Also,it highlights the absorbing plot theme in its expression,thus making it easier to penetrate into numerous aspects in people's lives,and as a result,the target audience could accept it cheerfully without any aversions.Therefore,the application of entertainment news to external communication has certain significance.Narrative rhetoric of 1980s is a popular paradigm in western rhetorical criticism.This thesis attempts to use Walter Fisher's narrative rhetoric paradigm as the theoretical basis,and adopts a combination of qualitative analysis and rhetorical analysis method to analyze the 13 representative texts with certain narrative features in Vanity Fair magazine from the year 2014 to 2018.First of all,this thesis explores the narrative elements of entertainment texts and their rhetorical functions and discusses the narratives in entertainment news in depth,thus demonstrating the compatibility of entertainment texts and narrative rhetoric.Secondly,by summarizing the three natures of the narrative paradigm,universality,elusiveness and intentionality,the entertainment information contained in the Vanity Fair text is fully investigated and explored.It is found that the entertainment information has its prominent rhetoric in expressing the related theme.This information conveys the values,attitudes,or viewpoints that the author wants to express through the three natures of the narrative,thereby achieving successful persuasion of the target audience.The study also finds that:(1)There are five key narrative elements of narrative rhetoric in entertainment news,narrator,time relationship,setting,character and theme.They are so related to each other,and under the norm of narrative rationality they transmit information and influence readers to achieve rhetorical purposes.(2)Compared with traditional reasoning persuasion,the interesting materials in entertainment news provide a fresh way of persuading for the rhetoric,that is,to make the readers receive more signals of joys while reading and make them more likely to accept the stories that the author conveys to them.(3)By discussing the entertainment expressions with persuasive function in entertainment reports,this paper finds that the universality,elusiveness and intentionality of the three narrative natures are fully manifested in the reports,they play a significant role in the communication strategies in entertainment reports.Plus,these narrative elements are generally"monitored"by narrative rationality in entertainment reports,more elaborately,the news is regulated by narrative possibility and faithfulness in the process of finding materials,writing and addressing,thus reducing the bad selection or alleviating the situation of lacking rational stories in rhetoric activities.(4)There are two modes of entertainment persuasion.One is "Serious Materials in an Amusing or an Easy Way",the other is"Entertainment Information with Profound Values".Through the narrative analysis of the entertainment discourse in Vanity Fair,a preliminary understanding of the positive role played by entertainment discourse in publicity and communication is formed.In practical terms,using narrative rhetoric to analyze entertainment news helps to explore the diverse information needs of the audience,arouse the dormant experience and feelings of the audience,and innovate the possible expression of materials,and most importantly,while the expression subtly conveys the attitudes and emotions of the author,it also satisfies people's psychological needs.
