The core literacy of English subjects consists of language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.As a value orientation,cultural awareness is a key factor in improving students' cultural understanding,cultural identity,and cultivating students' intercultural and communicative skills.This study explores the cultivation of cultural awareness in middle school English teaching,aiming to provide theoretical reference and practical ideas for basic foreign language education.This study first analyzes the background and significance of cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching,and summarizes existing research through literature analysis.At the same time,it seeks relevant theoretical support for the cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching,and summarizes the attributes of cultivation of cultural awareness.Secondly,it sorts out and analyzes the cultural awareness of the curriculum objectives(teaching objectives)in the English Curriculum Standards(English Teaching Standards)since the founding of the People's Republic of China,discusses the relationship between English education and cultural heritage,and explores the contemporary value of cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching.Thirdly,643 middle school students and 152 middle school English teachers were surveyed through questionnaires to understand the level of cultural awareness of middle school students and the status of cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching.Based on the current situation of the survey,8 middle school English teachers were selected as interviewees.The influencing factors of cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching were comprehensively summarized by interviews and grounded theory.Finally,according to the survey results,explore the strategies of cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching.The study found that the cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching is complex,long-term,implicit and different.The goal of English courses ranges from the lack of cultural awareness to the awakening,and then gradually strengthening.English education in China shoulders the responsibility of cultural inheritance,and the cultivation of cultural awareness has important contemporary value.Through questionnaire survey,it is found that the level of cultural awareness of students is significantly different in urban and rural areas,gender,grades,and whether they have experience abroad.The three aspects of cognition,attitude and behavioral orientation of cultural awareness are significantly correlated.The cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching has problems in teaching objectives,teaching content,teaching strategies and teaching evaluation.Through qualitative research,it is found that due to the cultural differences between Chinese and English,the cultural literacy of English teachers,the cultural environment of English curriculum and the evaluation system of English teaching,the cultivation of cultural awareness in English teaching is difficult.Also,the actual implementation is not good.Therefore,to cultivate cultural awareness in middle school English teaching,we must first understand the cultural differences between Chinese and English,including comparing cultural differences effectively,avoiding ethnocentrism and improving cultural aphasia.Secondly,it is necessary to improve the cultural quality of English teachers,including correcting the deviation of subject understanding,mining cultural materials of teaching materials and broadening the way of cultural learning.Once again,we should create a cultural environment for curriculum implementation,including optimizing the school culture and strengthening classroom culture.Finally,it is indispensable to enhance the cultural orientation of curriculum evaluation,including the integration of cultural factors into language assessment and the focus on Chinese traditional culture.
