Translating Detective Novels From The Perspective Of Context

Context theory has developed into a very important theory in the field of linguistics through the continuous improvement of Chinese and foreign scholars.It has a profound impact on various disciplines including translation.Context is inextricably related to translation.As a popular literary genre,detective novels have their own characteristics,such as compact and logical connection between plots,many dialogues and character descriptions,etc.,which determine that context must be taken into account in the translation of detective novels.From the micro-level,the author attempts to explore the translation strategies of detective novels under the guidance of context theory by analyzing the examples in the translation practice of Nancy Drew Series,Volume 6 of The Secret of Red Gate Farm and Volume 7 of The Clue in the Diary,so as to improve the quality of the translation and enable the target readers have a better reading experience.From the macro-level,this thesis is a useful attempt to explore the translation strategies of certain literary genres by using context theory,which is conducive to enriching the practice of applying context theory to the translation field.In addition,it also urges more researchers to pay attention to the translation of detective novels and promotes the development of the Chinese translation of detective novels.Specifically,according to the previous translation methods of detective novels and characteristics of this kind of novels,with the guidance of the theory of context,the author gives examples to illustrate the influence of three contextual factors on the quality of translation.At the end of the thesis,combining the characteristics of detective novels and different contextual factors,the author puts forward three translation strategies of detective novels:attaching importance to the role of context,integrating into the scene,and handling cultural context properly.
