It has gone through nearly a hundred years of the prehistoric archaeological work in the central and southern of Inner Mongolia since the archaeological investigation of Sang Zhihua in the Salawusu River Basin in Ordos in the 1920 s.Affected by war and other factors, field work was limited to several archaeological investigations since then. After the founding of People's China, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region established an archaeological research institute, and the archaeological work began to get on the right track.Several large-scale archaeological investigations and rescue excavations were undertaken, and a large number of first-hand materials were obtained. Before the 1980 s,archaeologists had been trying to find out the features and distribution of the prehistoric archaeological culture in this area.Since most of the archaeological activities at that time were investigation and trial excavation, they did not know much about the remains,so we could only recognize that the prehistoric culture of this area was similar to the Yangsho culture and Longshan culture in Central China, but also had their own characteristics. On this basis, some concepts such as "Chahekou type" and "stone pagoda type" are proposed. After the 1980 s,under the guidance of Mr.Su Bingqi's "Regional Category" theory, excavations and studies have been carried out successively in various districts in the central and southern Inner Mongolia. After 20 years' efforts, the chronological sequence and pedigree of prehistoric archaeological culture in the central and southern Inner Mongolia have been preliminarily established. After 2000,under the guidance of Mr.Zhang Zhongpei's project Human Culture,Industry and Environment in Hetao Pre-Qin and Han Dynasties, the research work has turned to a higher level,i.e.settlement archaeology and regional archaeological investigation. In 2017,the project Archaeological China will continue the research work in this area.Looking back at the past archaeological discoveries and research history,we can sum up the past experience and learn from the mistakes of past work and guide the future work. This paper mainly analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of prehistoric archaeological work in the central and southern Inner Mongolia from the aspects of archaeological discoveries and research history over the years. It also briefly sorts out the long-standing archaeological cultural naming confusion in the central and southern Inner Mongolia. The full text is divided into six chapters.Taking the time course of prehistoric archaeological discoveries and research in the central and southern Inner Mongolia as a clue, this paper discusses the characteristics of archaeological development in this area in different periods and the most troublesome problem in the research work—the problem of naming chaos in archaeological culture. The first chapter points out the content of archaeological history research, briefly describes the current research status of archaeological history in the central and southern Inner Mongolia, and introduces the natural geography and climate characteristics of this area and explains the division and causes. The second chapter briefly describes the basic course of prehistoric archaeological discovery activities in the central and southern Inner Mongolia, and summarizes them in sections to summarize their different development characteristics. The third chapter is to sort out the development history and characteristics of prehistoric archaeological research in this region, especially the process of establishing the prehistoric archaeological chronological sequence and pedigree in this region, and the archaeological workers in the central and southern Inner Mongolia under the great academic background. The corresponding research work, especially under the guidance of Mr.Su Bingqi and Zhang Zhongpei, has a clear goal and achievements in archaeological research in this area. The fourth chapter is a simple combing of the prehistoric archaeological culture in the central and southern Inner Mongolia. It points out that there are still controversial names and proposes solutions. The fifth chapter, the conclusion part, summarizes the development characteristics of prehistoric archaeology in the south-central part of Inner Mongolia.
