News is classified into two types:hard news and soft news, among which soft news refers to the type of news which is more lively, more relaxing, more appealing and of more human emotions and feelings, which involves social news, popular science articles, essays, anecdotes, etc. With the rise of online media and the increasing speed of information dissemination, online news has gradually become the mainstream of new media development at home and abroad.China Daily, the national English daily newspaper run by Chinese government,is so influential that it serves as an important window for China to understand the world and for the world to understand China. In recent years,China Daily has grabbed a large readership on new media platforms, such as websites, mobile phone Apps, and public accounts of WeChat. In the column"Bilingual" of China Daily, the contents are the translation and trans-editing of soft news from famous foreign journals and they are put on the Internet, which enrich readers'horizons and make their daily life more colorful to a large extent. In view of this, the present author chooses the online bilingual news in the column "Bilingual",of China Daily of 2018 as the subject of the study. In recent years, scholars at home and abroad have made a lot of research on traditional hard news translation from various perspectives. However,as a branch of non-mainstream news, there are relatively fewer studies done on online soft news translation.Among the translation research of soft news, researchers mostly focus on Chinese-English translation of soft news, with emphasis laid mainly on the specific translation strategies. In addition,Internet,a new medium, has provided the transmission of online soft new a wider platform and a larger readership, thus endowing online soft news some unique characteristics. On the other hand, relevance theory which is a cognitive pragmatic theory has a strong explanatory power.Hence, the present paper makes an analysis of online soft news translation under the guidance of relevance theory in an effort to explore some specific problems in E-C online soft news translation so that it can help us have a better understanding about E-C translation of online soft news. The present study finds that online soft news has its own characteristics,so when translating online soft news, translators should make sure that the choice of source text is of news values and attractive to readers which can suit their reading habits and meet their expectations.According to relevance theory, translation is an act of communication. The translator can make two ostensive-inferential processes in translating online soft news to help TT readers generate contextual effect as much as possible and meanwhile avoid their unnecessary processing efforts on the basis of analyzing the differences between ST author's and TT readers' cognitive environment.Besides, the translator can make the target text an interpretive resemblance to the source text to help the ST author fulfill his communicative intention and then the translator can realize the optimal relevance. The present author concludes three guidelines on online soft news translation. They are modifying contextual assumptions, pursuing the optimal relevance, and making ST author's intention and TT readers' expectation meet. The present paper may offer some useful reference for the in-depth study of English-Chinese online soft news translation.
