A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Trade Practice

With the continuous development of economic globalization and the initiative of "the Belt and Road",the trade between China and foreign economies is still becoming closer as the mainstream despite the uncertainties in world politics and global economy.However,due to their limited English proficiency,Chinese personnel in foreign trade have difficulties in communicating with their counterparts in English-speaking countries.Therefore,it is urgent to publish various bilingual guidelines on business and trade practice which can serve as reference books for the foreign trade personnel in China.As a result,Trade Practice was published.The author of this project report participated in the translation of this booklet commissioned by the client of Taiwan Milliard International Business Company from January to February of 2018.Originally written in Chinese,the text covers the import and export customs clearance,the composition of business letters and other trade activities.The translation of this text is to help practitioners master foreign trade procedures in a bilingual way,and to carry out foreign trade activities more effectively in professional English.During the translation,the author found that the difficulties of translation were rooted in terminologies and polysemous words,culturally-loaded words and non-passive sentences(i.e.the active sentences with subjects and null-subject sentences).Based on her translation practice,the author analyzes the difficulties and their causes under the guidance of Communicative Translation of Peter Newmark and Dynamic Message Equivalence(4Es)of Weng Fengxiang,and puts forward various methods and strategies such as domestication,reversing and combination to deal with the issues mentioned above.Through summing up the experience gained in translating the booklet Trade Practice,the author hopes to offer some help or reference for future practice and research concerning the translation of similar kind of texts.
