The Art of War highly summarizes the military thoughts and strategies of ancient China, and fully demonstrates the unique oriental wisdom and the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation. It has been translated into many languages and has a great impact both at home and abroad.Lin Wusun's translated version is well “adapted” to the translational eco-environment among many English translations.Through a series of translation selections,Lin Wusun has rendered an excellent translated version that is understandable for the target readers and in accord with their reading habits.Deeply loved by the military fans and English readers,Lin's version has been reprinted many times and lasted for a long time. Therefore,it is of great value to study Lin's translated version of The Art of War.Eco-translatology believes that translation is the process of the translator's adaptive selections and selective adaptations.Translators are responsible for coordinating the interrelationships among the translational environments, translated versions and translators. What's more,eco-translatology is “the art of balance” among textual ecology, translational ecology and “translation community” ecology.Through the adaptations and selections of the translator, the interactions among “translational environments, translated versions and translators” can be realized, thus achieving eco-holism in translation, and the concept of balance and harmony. The translator's selections affect the quality and life of the translated versions, and provide sufficient conditions for the balance of textual ecology, translational ecology and “translation community” ecology. Therefore, guided by the theory of eco-translatology,this thesis undertakes a systematic analysis of how Lin Wusun makes appropriate selections when translating The Art of War,that is,to study his specific selection strategies.Lin Wusun's translated version conforms to the new era of Chinese culture “going out”.In the process of translation, the translator Lin Wusun mainly makes appropriate translation selections in three aspects: textual ecology(translated versions),translational ecology(translational environments)and “translation community” ecology(translators). In terms of Lin Wusun's selections in the aspect of textual ecology,he has chosen to moderately “lean on” the ecology of the source text, which mainly involves the selection of translation methods and the selection of translation strategies of rhetorical devices. In terms of his selections in the aspect of translational ecology,he has chosen to make up for the translational eco-environment,which mainly involves three aspects: making up for historical cultural information, making up for military cultural information and making up for measurement unit information. In terms of his selections in the aspect of “translation community” ecology,he has made two choices to achieve the best dynamic equilibrium, namely, choosing to be faithful to the original author, and choosing to maintain the dynamic balance between the original author and the target readers. The author hopes that this thesis will be helpful in the in-depth study of eco-translatology.And it can provide some references for the study of the English translation of Chinese classics. The author also hopes that it will help to carry forward Chinese culture and embody oriental wisdom.
