Since the “going out” strategy was proposed, cultural exchange and diffusion have been paid more attention. As Newmark(2001)states,translation is one of the most important and effective ways in cultural exchange and diffusion. It is also an important way for Chinese culture to go global. It is known that Chinese culture-loaded words are closely linked with Chinese culture and language. The translation of culture-loaded words is of great significance for the dissemination of Chinese culture. Therefore,it is very important for translators to choose proper and effective translation methods when they translate culture-loaded words.Translators can choose different but proper translation methods to achieve the desired effects based on different requirements, features of readers and types of texts.Based on the classification of culture-loaded words by Nida, this thesis is aimed to analyze translation of culture-loaded words by taking the versions of Chang Hen Ge as the research objects translated by Xu Yuanzhong and Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang.Firstly, the author analyzes culture-loaded words from five categories, namely ecological culture-loaded words, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, religious culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-1oaded words.Secondly, the author studies the communicative and semantic translation of culture-loaded words. And finally, the author analyzes the statistics of each type of culture-loaded words and translation methods. On account of data research and contrast, the author finds that semantic translation mainly involves literal translation and transliteration while communicative translation mostly includes free translation, amplification, adaptation and omission.Through the classifications, analysis and statistics of culture-loaded words, the author discovers thatMr.Xu and Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys have adopted communicative translation when translating some parts of the culture-loaded words in the hope to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained by the readers of the original.Contrastively, they have adopted semantic translation to translate more parts of culture-loaded words, aiming at preserving the original semantic and syntactic structure of culture-loaded words and making the translated culture-loaded words maintain clear and distinctive as wel as the spirit of the original culture in the target language. What's more, choices of translation methods in Chang Hen Ge made by Mr.Xu and Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys on the translation of culture-loaded words coincide with the strategy of Chinese culture——going global. Thus it can be seen that semantic and communicative translation have important practice instruction significance for the translation of culture-loaded words in ancient poetry. It can also be concluded that translators should pay more attention to the faithfulness of the source language and culture when translating the culture-loaded words in ancient poetry.Translators ought to try their best to represent and popularize Chinese culture with original taste and flavour.
