An Analysis On English Translation Of Culture-Loaded Words In Frog From The Perspective Of Semantic And Communicative Translation

Mo Yan's Frog,as an excellent and straightforward literary work,won the Nobel Prize for Literature.Its English translation of Howard Goldblatt won the hearts of the judges,which shows its research value in translation.In the past,the study of culture-loaded words in Frog did not use Newmark's translation theory as a precedent.Therefore,this article aims to fill in that blank.This study takes the Goldblatt's English translation of Frog as an example,taking the culture-loaded words in Frog as the primary research subject,collecting the culture-loaded words in the novel,and using the five culture-loaded words proposed by Nida as the basis for classification.This research mainly discussed three contents:Goldblatt's translation methods for culture-loaded words in Frog;the practical application of semantic translation and communicative translation theory embodied by the translation methods of culture-loaded words and the correctness of Goldblatt's translated culture-loaded words.Finally,the following three research findings were obtained:(1)A total of 529 culture-loaded words appeared in the full text,with a total of five major culture-loaded word classifications;Goldblatt used five translation methods of communicative translation and four translation methods of semantic translation for the translation of culture-loaded words.(2)Goldblatt's translation methods used in the translation of Frog mostly apply communicative translation theory.His choice of translation methods made the translation biased to the target language and target language readers,and thus deviated from the actual meaning of the source text.(3)Goldblatt's improper handling of 419 culture-loaded words is divided into four cases.In this paper,Newmark's translation theory is used as a framework to confirm the applicability of the theory in the practical study of culture-loaded words,which helps promote the practical application of translation theory and achieve its specific guiding significance.Although this research has shortcomings,we can still get enlightenments from the study of culture-loaded words and theoretical applications.
