This thesis focuses on the question of “essence of number ” according to Frege's perspective of philosophy of language.By tracing and sorting out Frege's philosophy of language and the calculus system of logic, this thesis summarizes and refines the basis of logic and mathematical thought of Frege. The main points are as follows:First, the number born with the expression of a concept – this is mainly to answer that a number existing here also explains something we can't see on the surface.Second, the number suitable for the concept of F is the extension of the concept of “equal to the concept of F ”–this is the definition of the concept of “number” in Frege's view.In the process of reaching these conclusions,Frege always adhered to the following three principles: First,it is necessary to clearly distinguish between psychological and logical things, subjective things and objective things;second,we must study the meaning of words in the connection of sentences rather than put the words individually;thirdly, the difference between concept and object should be noticed at all times.Frege's study has to end with the trouble of Antinomy of Russell. In his later life,Frege reflected on his early views on numbers and tried to re-establish an arithmetic-based research system, but ultimately did not succeed.By combing and studying Frege's philosophical thoughts and logical principles, clarifying “essence of number” will have positive academic significance for studying and identifying the origin of analytic philosophy.
