A Study On Aesthetic Representation Of Selected Poems Of Chu Yuan From The Perspective Of Translation Aesthetics

Chu Ci,a great literature masterpiece,not only makes significant impact on the later Chinese poetry,but also helps to shape the Chinese culture and spirit,due to its goodness of literature art,including beautiful words,magnificent sentences and grand structure,and its goodness in Chines traditional spirit and emotion.Sun Dayu is a modern Poet,translator and researcher in Shakespeare,devoting his whole life to Chinese-English or English-Chinese translation career and literature research task,which makes him great achievement both in Chinese and English literature.Selected Poems of Chu Yuan,translated by Sun Dayu is a classical English version of Chu Chi,as it wins high opinion for its beautiful language and academic long foreword,notes and comments.Contemporary translation aesthetics theory pays close attention on original text form Translation Aesthetic Object(TAO)and Translation Aesthetic Subject(TAS).After studying existing English versions of Chu Ci by both home and abroad,and Translation studies on these English versions,this thesis is trying to find out the translation aesthetic methods from both TAO and TAS' two aspects of formal and informal system on the theory basis of An Introduction to Translation and Aesthetics by means of analyzing translation examples in Selected Poems of Chu Yuan.Since Liu Miqing deeply studies subjective dynamics' impact on translation aesthetic representation from four aspects of TAO's subjective dynamics,Aesthetic feeling,knowledge,capability and tenacity,this thesis is trying to study Sun Dayu's strategies by representing poet Qu Yuan's deep emotion by Sun Dayu's aesthetic feeling,representing historic context of Chu Ci by Sun Dayu's knowledge,representing artistic goodness of poem by Sun Dayu's capability and representing spirit and sentiments by Sun Dayu's tenacity.This part also studies impact of subjective dynamics' four parts on process of aesthetics representation:Comprehension-Transformation-Improvement-Representation.On the aspect of TAS,the thesis is trying to find out translation aesthetic representation measures from formal and informal system.Sun Dayu applies alliteration,rhythm and reduplication to represent goodness in sound,and antithesis and parallelism to represent goodness in sentences.By analyzing the whole poem by Qu Yuan in Chu Ci,this study find that Qu Yuan express his political ambition to help loved country and people in Chu country and strong willingness for pursuing good virtue by various images in Chu Ci,as a result,the translation measures of how to represent the love and willingness behind those images are vital important.Sun Dayu in Selected Poems of Chu Yuan employs literal translation,literaltransition and notes,literal transition and amplification and notes to represent Qu Yuan's goodness in virtue,and employs free translation,free translation and notes,transliteration and amplification and notes to represent political ambition of poet.Even though it's impossible to copy all aesthetics elements from original text to translation text,like Selected Poems of Chu Yuan,by full use of subjective dynamics' influence on each step of translation aesthetics representation,and choosing translation measures skillfully,representing translation aesthetics could be realized.
