The trans-Atlantic slave trade, which was full of misery and terror, provided the primitive accumulation of capital for the development of capitalism in Europe. This translation practice report is based on the translation of the seventh chapter of The Slave Ship: A Human History written by Marcus Rediker. This chapter details the hellish governance by captains of the slave ship and the misfortunes of the slaves, revealing the barbaric and sordid nature of the slave trade. It is hoped that the translation can promote the public?s understanding of the slave trade and provide a reference for the study of related human history. This report consists of four parts. The first part is an introduction to the project of translation practice, which explains the content of the original text and the practical significance of the translation task. The second part is mainly about the description of the whole translation process, which stresses the classification of the problems existing in the translation and the choice of the Theory of Contextual Adaptation as theoretical guidance to deal with these problems. The third part details the application of the Theory of Contextual Adaptation and case study. From the perspectives of linguistic context and communicative context, this part discusses how the Theory of Contextual Adaptation is applied to the revision of translation problems existing on the aspects of cohesion, lexical meaning, logical sequencing, rhetorical translation and normative Chinese expressions. The last part is the summary of the translation practice, giving an account of the author?s self-reflection on the task, practical experience and a deeper understanding of being a qualified translator.
