The trilogy of The Three-body Problem is a famous hard science fiction composed by Liu Cixin. The novel is characterized by precise and rigorous words, and grand and magnificent imagination, paying equal attention to humanistic care and rational thinking. The work was acclaimed as an excellent work bringing Chinese science fiction to the world level. In 2014,The Three-body Problem I was translated by a Chinese-American sci-fi writer and translator Ken Liu.After the publication of the English translation, the novel was highly praised by overseas sci-fi fans and nominated for a number of international sci-fi awards, and finally won the Hugo Award. This gratifying achievement is not only inseparable from the author's efforts, but also due to the flexible choice of translation methods and strategies of translator Ken Liu and the adjustment to the acceptance of English readers. This thesis has analyzed translation methods and strategies of the English version of The Three-body Problem translated by Ken Liu in accordance with relevance theory. The Three-body Problem is a novel of science fiction, but its content is all-encompassing,which is not only limited to the professional physics and astronomical knowledge of hard science fiction, but also involves Chinese idioms, ancient Chinese and foreign history and Chinese traditional culture.Scientific and cultural examples were selected and their translation methods and strategies have been explored. The thesis has displayed numerous selected examples from Chinese version and English version of The Three-body Problem. As relevance theory points out, translation is an ostensive-inferential process of communication.Through the analysis of each example from the perspective of relevance theory, the author tried to explore the translator's translation practice: how did the translator achieve the optimal relevance of the original text? Whether he has grasped the optimal relevance accurately? Which translation strategy is used to make dynamic compliance? Whether the translation reproduces the original author's cognitive intentions andcommunicative intentions faithfully and caters to the target reader's acceptance. The study found that Ken Liu gives preference to foreignization strategy rather than domestication strategy, retaining the exotic flavor of the original text and leaving the imagination space for readers.Science fiction is still considered to be a periphery literary genre,as well as the related translation research of this area.Research of the English translation of The Three-body Problem aims to provide translators with more ideas and references, which will be beneficial to the international influence and communication of Chinese science fiction works in the future, and contribute to the transmission of Chinese culture in the international world.
