With the idea of core literacy education being proposed,cultivating students' critical thinking has become one of the goals of educational reform in recent years.Full-time Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard also proposes that it is necessary to cultivate students' ability to analyze and solve problems in English and to cultivate their critical thinking ability.Therefore,the design of English teaching should help to promote students' thinking ability.This thesis aims to prove that critical reading taught in English reading classes of junior middle school can improve students' reading comprehension ability and increase students' reading interest.In teaching,critical reading is regarded as an important way to cultivate students' critical thinking ability.Critical reading is a high-level understanding of the text.It is a positive and individualized reading,which attaches great importance to readers' participation,the independent inquiry,reflection,question,analysis and evaluation in the process of reading.However,in the current junior middle school,English reading teaching values grammatical and knowledge and it despises discourse and learning methods,which neglects the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability.Data of interview and the questionnaires show that most students know little about reading strategies.They have weak reading ability and have low interest in reading.In order to change the current situation of English reading teaching,the research aims to obtain some methods of critical reading teaching in junior middle schools through the application of experiment on critical reading.This study conducts experiment on critical reading teaching based on relevant literature on critical reading both at home and abroad.The research questions are proposed as the follows:(1)What's current situation of English reading teaching in junior middle school?(2)How to implement critical reading teaching in junior middle school English class?(3)How does critical reading teaching affect students' critical reading ability? The experiment,lasting eighteen weeks,is carried out in a junior middle school.101 students in two parallel classes of grade three are selected randomly as the research subject.Class1 is selected as the experimental class and class2 is selected as the control class.The students in the EC accepts critical readingteaching and training of critical reading strategies,while students in the CC accepts traditional teaching approach.This study uses three instruments of questionnaire,interview and reading test.The collected data in the experiment are processed and analyzed by SPSS 20.The research results are shown as the follows: Firstly,critical reading enables students to understand and master more critical reading strategies,which helps to strengthen students' awareness of using critical reading strategies to deal with the text.Secondly,critical reading teaching can improve students' critical reading ability.Students' reading accuracy and reading speed are better than before.In addition,critical reading helps to improve students' critical thinking ability.Finally,Most of the students are satisfied with the mode of critical reading teaching,which can help students to solve problems they have met in reading comprehension.Based on that,students' reading interest and reading confidence can be gradually improved.
