China-specific words(CSWs)contain rich Chinese cultural information and distinctive national cultural characteristics, which are especially important for the spreading of Chinese culture. However,in real life,China-specific words are often stumbling blocks for translators when engaging in translation and writing activities, and they are also quite difficult for Chinese language foreign learners. The definition of bilingual dictionaries is different from the definition of monolingual dictionaries. The definition of bilingual dictionaries mainly lies in providing translational equivalents and translational definition in the target language.Chinese-English dictionaries not only need to meet the actual needs of dictionary users, but also need to take into account the spreading of Chinese culture. Therefore, studying the translational equivalents and definition of China-specific words in Chinese-English dictionary has important theoretical and practical significance for enriching the definition theory and improving the definition level, and it is of great significance to help Chinese culture "go global" and promote the construction of Chinese cultural soft power as well. This paper comprehensively analyzes the existing scholars' researches on cultural characteristic words. In order to facilitate the study of the method of translational equivalents and definition of the characteristic words, this paper divides them into three categories: material cultural characteristic words, institutional cultural characteristic words and spiritual cultural characteristic words. This thesis takes China-specific words in New Age Chinese-English Dictionary(the 2nd edition)(NACED)and China-related English Corpus(CREC)as the research objects, and selects the representative CSWs from NACED and high-frequency CSWs from CREC as examples to make analyses of the translational equivalents and definition of these CSWs in the dictionary and the English expressions in CREC.And then this thesis summarizes the rules and existing problems of CSWs' translational equivalents and definition, and points out the places where needs improvement to enrich and improvethe translational equivalents and definition of CSWs in the Chinese-English dictionary. The study found that: 1)in NACED,the translation theory of CSWs' equivalents is mainly foreignization, supplemented by domestication, and combing both sometimes;2)for material cultural words, their transliteration and literal translation can better reflect Chinese characteristics,so the English expressions based on transliteration and literal translation are very important;3)foreign translators are more inclined to use transliteration than Chinese translators for CSWs that cannot be translated literally;4)the same category of CSWs should adopt a unified translational definition pattern according to their word composition and characteristics;5)When there are multiple translations for one CSW,it should include them as many as possible if the space permits according to their frequency;6)Auxiliary definition methods, such as illustrations, are very intuitive and effective for the translational definition of CSWs.Therefore,Chinese-English dictionary can adopt auxiliary definition methods in appropriate situation.
