A Study On The Definition Of Cultural-loaded Words In Longman Dictionary Of English Language And Culture

Cultural-loaded words plays an very important role in cross-cultural communication,thedefinition of cultural-loaded words is the focus of learner’s dictionary. At present, our studyon the definition of cultural-loaded words in learner’s dictionary is not good enough.In thispaper,we use the definition of cultural-loaded words in Longman Dictionary of EnglishLanguage and Culture and The Commercial Press Learner’s Dictionary of ContemporaryChinese as research material,discuss the definition of cultural-loaded words from fouraspects:the definition idea of cultural-loaded words in Longman Dictionary of EnglishLanguage and Culture;the definition factors and mode of cultural-loaded words in LongmanDictionary of English Language and Culture;the definition manner of cultural-loaded wordsin Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture;the shortcomings of TheCommercial Press Learner’s Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese in definition ofcultural-loaded words.Use the successful experience of Longman Dictionary of EnglishLanguage and Culture,we provide some proposals for definition of cultural-loaded words inChinese learner’s dictionary.This paper is divides into six chapters:The first chapter,Introduction.Including the review, purpose and meaning, the guidingideology, theory basis, research materials and research methods.The second chapter, the definition idea of cultural-loaded words in Longman Dictionaryof English Language and Culture. This chapter discuss from four aspects:the definitionform,the definition language, the definition content, the definition principle. We discuss thedefinition idea which reflect in that four aspects.The third chapter,the definition factors and mode of cultural-loaded words in LongmanDictionary of English Language and Culture.In this chapter, cultural-loaded words inLongman Dictionary of English Language and Culture are divides into21categories.Wesummarized the definition factors and mode for every category.The fourth chapter, the definition manner of cultural-loaded words in LongmanDictionary of English Language and Culture.The definition of cultural-loaded words inLongman Dictionary of English Language and Culture is combine with encyclopedia,andseveral definition manner are used in conjunction. The fifth chapter,the shortcomings of the definition of cultural-loaded words in Chineselearner’s dictionary.In this chapter,we point out the shortcomings of the definition ofcultural-loaded words in The Commercial Press Learner’s Dictionary of ContemporaryChinese.They are: lexical entries included, the definition factors and mode, the definitionmanner, cultural background knowledge, the structure of meso, collocation information.The sixth chapter,some proposals for the definition of cultural-loaded words in Chineselearner’s dictionary.This chapter provide some proposals for the definition of cultural-loadedwords in Chinede learner’s dictionary on the basis of above studies from three aspects:thedefinition idea, the definition theory, the definition content.
