The character depiction is the major task for a novelist.As a result,it is significant for the translators to grasp the features of characters deeply and reproduce them accurately.This report is based on the translation of Where the Crawdads Sing by American wildlife scientist Delia Owens.The translator selects the first six chapters to be the source text of her translation task and writes a report on problems and solutions in the process of translation.The novel Where the Crawdads Sing mainly tells a story about Kya,who has been abandoned by her families.She is trying to survive by herself from a young age.She has to fend for herself.Then She met a boy,called Tate,who is like a ray of sunshine lighting Kya's life and teaches her how to love.At the end of the story,Kya lives a happy life with Tate in the marshland.When translating this novel,the translator chooses functional equivalence as the translation principle to help her better reproduce the fictional character.This report is made up of four parts,namely task description,process description,case study and conclusion.In the third part of the report,the writer analyzes from four aspects: portrait depiction,action depiction,mental activities depiction and dialogue depiction.In portrait depiction,the writer focuses on the translation of the adjective.In action depiction,the translator pays much attention to conjunctions and verbs.In psychological depiction,the translator notes that there are three kinds.In translating interior monologue,delivering the character's emotion is of great importance;in rendering imagination presentation,the translator should try to fully convey the imaginary scene;as for the psychological depiction from the third-person point of view,properly dilating would be a good way to help readers understand the character's feeling.In dialogue depiction,the translator needs to distinguish the relationship between the speakers.Because the character may talks in totally different ways when he/she encounters different people.Through this report,the translator expects that she can give assistance for other translators in terms of reproducing fictional characters.
