In the first half of the 20 th century,Chinese art suffered fierce upheavals.Facing both challenges of salvation and enlightenment at the same time, the process of Chinese art modernization was in a period of stagnation and therefore, many intellectuals and art workers were anxious to seek the direction of their future. The road to innovate the Chinese art is extremely tough.Sun Zongwei was an extremely marginalized or even a forgotten character in the history of modern Chinese art.He learned the comparatively basic orthodox methods of Western painting taught by Xu Beihong and went to Dunhuang as a pioneer for coping the ancient Chinese murals and statues here, which made Chinese art be known to the world. His special life experience during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression made Sun Zongwei's paintings gradually form a unique style featured both rigorous skills of the formation of images and oriental charm. The batch of works created during his stay in the West of China must be the prominent ones with the original multi-ethnic characteristics and the unique poetry of Chinese paintings which are vividly displayed in these paintings. The trip to the west plays a vital role in the formation of his artistic style.Since the foundation of the People's Republicof China, the Chinese art trend has also changed in line with the process of socialism.Sun Zongwei had to make his own choices under the request of the new art developing situation.Although the transformation process is quite hard for him,and many works he created in the later period are not satisfying,Sun Zongwei has always maintained a positive attitude to self-adjustment in this transformation process. This thesis explores the cultural connotation and ideological thoughts behind pictures, the relationship between the evolution of the individual artistic style and the history of modern Chinese art by studying his painting style and his personal subjective initiative at the level of cultural appeal.
