He Dun's trilogy(Hunan Mules,Afterlife Goodbye,The Fourth Students in the Huangpu Military Academy)on the Anti-Japanese War inherits and develops contemporary Anti-Japanese War literature to a certain extent. From the perspective of historical track, artistic characteristics and artistic value of the development of contemporary Anti-Japanese War novels,on one hand, the trilogy inherits “historical facts” tradition of the literature in themes,on the other hand,it also brings forth new ideas manifesting in legendary, idealism and nationality of the trilogy in artistic expression. The thesis consists of five major parts. The introduction mainly introduces the research status, purpose and significance of He Dun's Anti-Japanese War trilogy.Numerous scholars have studied and explored it.The trilogy has caused a huge storm in literary circles and market and is of great significance to the overall development trend, social value and academic value of contemporary Anti-Japanese War novels. In chapter one, legendary of the trilogy is discussed. He Dun inherits and develops the “legendary” tradition of the novels and writes legends through folk perspective;he enhances the legendary of his novel through a series of “legend” images. He describes the fantastic life and death experience of “hero”(civilians/elites),shapes the “legend” characters, narrates the “legend” characters' destiny, and completes the “legendary” writing by making use of a “legend” writing style. In chapter two, idealism of the trilogy is explained. He Dun creates extremely typical and representative Hunan characters, including “bloody mules” swearing to resist and bustling “spicy girls”.He portrays the ideality and adherence of people in the Anti-Japanese war by telling the history and story of the War.In chapter three, nationality of the trilogy is expounded. In terms of nationality,he chooses the tradition, continues the traditional artistic expression, and adopts an expression reflecting the regional characteristics to construct his novels. It integrates the national aesthetic characteristics with the brand of Confucian culture and displays the themes of “being too rooted down to consider moving to another place” and “reunion”.The conclusion summarizes the artistic characteristics of the Anti-Japanese War trilogy. As a classic novel about the War,it not only inherits and develops some tradition of contemporary Chinese Anti-Japanese War literature, but also reflects the literary value of thought and art of the trilogy.
