This report is on the translation of the SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence compiled by Dr.Janet M.Bennett,which is published by SAGE Publications(Inc)in the United States on June 3,2015.As a reference book,the Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence has strict selection of materials and authority on both intercultural competence and related issues.Therefore,it is an indispensable academic reference for University libraries.The translation of this book tends to be helpful to supplement the encyclopedic knowledge and pragmatics of intercultural competence in China,and tries to provide practical guiding significance for the development and construction of them.This translation report consists of five parts: the first two parts introduce the translation project and the translation process respectively;the third part explains the theoretical framework,according to Newmark's theory of text typology,the book,based on informative text,is translated by adoption of communicative translation and semantic translation in the process,and the both of them complement each other;the fourth part gives a detailed explanation by case study in terms of lexical level,syntactic level,textual level and cultural level,discussing the difficulties of how to translate the informative text(such as complex long sentences,frequent nominalization and passive voice patterns);the last part is the translation summary.In the process of translation,the translator has acquired much knowledge about intercultural competence,at the same time,I have improved the translator's literacy and skills by searching for a large number of materials and continuous revision of the translation.Besides,I understand that only by combining theory with practice can a good work be translated.I hoped that this report would provide some valuable suggestions for other scholars as well.
