Cultural Default In Translation From The Perspective Of Adaption And Selection

There are more than 5,000 languages in the world.It is translation that brings great convenience to communication across cultures.Translation is not only a simple linguistic transformation,but also an exchange between two cultures.Due to the different historical development,nationalities will form different history and culture.Therefore,in cross-cultural communication,cultural default leads to communication barriers and is also a big challenge to translation.To ensure successful communication,the translator is expected to work out cultural defaults in the source language text(SLT)and adopt appropriate translation compensation strategies in the target language text(TLT).In this way,the difficulty challenging the target language(TL)reader can be reduced and the information of the SLT can be fully obtained on the part of the TL reader.Taking the two translations of Shen Congwen's famous novel Bian Cheng as examples,the paper analyzes the cultural defaults in the novel and the corresponding translation strategies from the perspective of Hu Gengshen's approach to translation as adaptation and selection(ATAS).The paper firstly gives a literature review to Hu's ATAS and cultural default,which involves the domestic and overseas researches.The major translations of Bian Cheng are discussed in the part.Secondly,it presents detailed introductions to ATAS and cultural default,and explores the relationship between them,expounding the functions and effects of adaptation and selection strategies in processing cultural defaults.Finally,the cultural defaults in Bian Cheng are classified,and the two most popular versions of Bian Cheng,namely the Yangs' version and Kinkley's version,are compared and analyzed from the perspective of ATAS.By comparing the strategies of the Yangs and Kinkley in dealing with cultural defaults,the translation compensation strategies for rendering default messages to the TL reader are summarized.Through the analysis of specific examples,the paper draws the conclusion: in the process of translation,the translator should fully consider the eco-environment of the SLT and the experience of the TL reader,adopt appropriate translation compensation strategies,and select the translation with high degree of holistic adaptation and selection.
