With the advancement of modern technology, machine translation has gradually become a vital component in patent translation.However,machine-translated texts can hardly meet the standards of patent translation, and significant linguistic differences may be represented between the two texts. As a professional patent translation software,WIPO Translate has attracted wide attention. To get a better understanding of linguistic features of abstracts and guide translation practice, research on the abstracts published by the Patent and Trademark Office of the United States and those translated by WIPO Translate are conducted. With the assistance of online patent database Google Patents and corpus tools, research focuses on the different linguistic features at terminology, lexical and semantic levels. Results shows that the WIPO translated texts can achieve a higher accuracy in terminology despite some discrepancy and errors in nouns and modifiers. The translated texts from WIPO Translate have the characteristics of language transfer and explicitness at the lexical level.Besides, the linguistic features of overuse in synonyms and coherence at the semantic level are reflected. These features are beneficial to the understanding and translation practice of the patent abstract.
