Strategies For C-E Translation Of Patent Abstract From The Perspective Of Linguistic Adaptation

As a crucial part of the patent specification,patent abstract not only enjoys a huge demand for the Chinese-English translation of it,but also requires highly on the timeliness,accuracy and professionalism of its translation.At present,there are many businesses involving patent abstract translation in the market,but the research on it is relatively limited.Most of the research focuses on describing the characteristics of Chinese and English patent abstracts instead of on the strategies or techniques for C-E translation of patent abstract,lacking systematic theoretical one.Based on the author's participation in the project of patent abstract translation provided by Intellectual Property Publishing House,this translation report takes Verschueren's linguistic adaptation theory as the theoretical foundation and case study as the research method.The report analyzes the typical examples in the translation practice from the perspective of contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability and dynamic adaptation,and proposes three strategies for Chinese-English translation of patent abstract.The report is composed of project description,introduction of the guiding theory used,analysis on concrete examples from patent abstract rendition as well as a summary.In the case analysis part,in addition to using the guiding theory to analyze the translation examples,the author also proposes three kinds of translation strategies:literal translation,imitating translation and borrowing translation.It is expected that the theories and translation strategies discussed in the report can be beneficial to translators engaged in the Chinese-English translation of patent abstract.
